Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
