Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
