EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
