Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
