The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
