In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
